Earth is a distant memory. Habitable extrasolar planets are still out of reach. For generations, humanity has been clinging to survival by establishing colonies within enormous vacuum-breathing space beasts and mining their resources to the point of depletion.

Rash, dreamy, and unconventional, Seske Kaleigh should be preparing for her future role as clan leader, but her people have just culled their latest beast, and she’s eager to find the cause of the violent tremors plaguing their new home. Defying social barriers, Seske teams up with her best friend, a beast worker, and ventures into restricted areas for answers to end the mounting fear and rumors. Instead, they discover grim truths about the price of life in the void.

Then, Seske is unexpectedly thrust into the role of clan matriarch, responsible for thousands of lives in a harsh universe where a single mistake can be fatal. Her claim to the throne is challenged by a rival determined to overthrow her and take control—her intelligent, cunning, and confident sister.

Seske may not be a born leader like her sister, yet her unorthodox outlook and incorruptible idealism may be what the clan needs to save themselves and their world.

Nearly a thousand years removed from Earth, the remnants of humanity cling to existence inside giant, space faring creatures known as the Zenzee. Abused and exploited by humans for generations, these majestic animals nearly went extinct, but under the command of its newly minted ruler, Doka Kaleigh, life in the Parados I has flourished. Thanks to careful oversight and sacrifice by all of its crew, they are now on the brink of utopia, and yet Doka’s rivals feel threatened by that success.

The Senate allowed Doka to lead their people believing he’d fail spectacularly—a disaster that would cement the legitimacy of their long-standing matriarchy. Despite vocal opposition and blatant attacks on his authority, Doka has continued to handle his position with grace and intelligence; he knows a single misstep means disaster. When a cataclysmic event on another Zenzee world forces Doka and his people to accept thousands of refugees, a culture clash erupts, revealing secrets from the past that could endanger their future. For Doka, the stakes are bigger and more personal than ever before—and could cost him his reign and his heart.

He has fallen for the one woman he is forbidden to love: his wife, Seske.

Doka and Seske must work closely together to sway the other Zenzee worlds to stop their cycles of destruction. But when they stumble upon a discovery that can transform their world, they know they must prepare to fight a battle where there can be no winners, only survivors.

Almost a hundred years ago, the Enchanters defeated the Lord of the Underworld in one of the most fearsome wars the world had ever seen. The public thinks that this victory means the people are safe. But they’re wrong. The supernatural beasts the Lord unleashed remain on the earth, multiplying and ravaging what’s left of civilization. As long as these monsters exist, mankind will be in danger. And though the government, ruled by the magic-wielding Enchanters, seeks to protect their people, they are too few in number. They need the Defenders – a special class of non-magical humans – to fight the monsters. The Defenders are an elite force, and mankind’s only hope against the horrors that live beyond their gates.

Fourteen-year-old Aurelia “the Firedragon” Sun has been training since she could walk to become a Defender, and her extraordinary combat skills have earned the attention of the powerful government. In fact, she’s been tapped to represent her nation in an international monster-fighting competition, which pits champions from across the globe against creatures of the Underworld in a violent spectacle. If she wins, she will become a full-fledged member of the Defender force.

But as Aurelia moves deeper into the competition, she realizes that all is not as it appears. There’s something sinister behind the competition, something that could change the way she sees everything … and the Enchanters, it seems, are not the heroes she thought. Aurelia begins to ask questions. But before she can discover the truth, she is pitted against the most dangerous monster in the competition – one that will take her life if it can.

Two days before the start of her junior year, seventeen-year-old Janelle Tenner is hit by a pickup truck and killed—as in blinding light, scenes of her life flashing before her, and then nothing. Except the next thing she knows, she’s opening her eyes to find Ben Michaels, a loner from her high school whom Janelle has never talked to, leaning over her. And even though it isn’t possible, she knows—with every fiber of her being—that Ben has somehow brought her back to life.

While snooping in her FBI agent father’s files for clues about her accident, she uncovers a clock that seems to be counting down to something—but to what? And when someone close to Janelle is killed, she can no longer deny what’s right in front of her: Everything that’s happened—the accident, the murder, the countdown clock, Ben’s sudden appearance in her life—points to the end of life as she knows it. And as the clock ticks down, she realizes that if she wants to put a stop to the end of the world, she’s going to need to uncover Ben’s secrets—and keep from falling in love with him in the process.

My Take
I attended a book signing where Elizabeth Norris was there! I decided to give her book a try. She was promoting the sequel to Unraveling so I decided to get the first book to see if I liked it. I did get the paperback book signed which is always awesome to do. It was fun to meet her and the other authors that were there as well. I had an open mind when I began to read this book.

Janelle is a teenager who lives with her mother, father and brother. Her life looks great on the outside to everyone but inside it is chaos. Her mother is bipolar and is constantly taken care of. Her father works long hours and is rarely home to help out when needed. What it boils down is that Janelle does most of the work around the house. She is almost taking on second mom duties. She gets along with her brother great as I loved their relationship with each other. She is just an amazing character. Pretty busy life, Janelle has!

One day things all seem normal until Janelle dies and then comes back to life! Well that sure got my attention. It took Janelle a while to put the pieces together on what had happened to her. When she figures it all out, it’s quite a shock considering it is also related to her father’s work. She began to snoop and let her interest fall into the depths of investigating. She is one smart cookie! Even I was shocked when I read what had happened to Janelle. This point in the book left me wanting to know more! So that required more reading.

She also did not expect to fall in love with Ben. Ben is quite the guy. He’s a quiet guy around at the school. Even though the spark is there for Ben and Janelle! They know there is work to be done to solve the mystery and save the world. While trying to solve the mystery, they uncover some gruesome scenes which is a combination of science fiction and paranormal. It was different and unique. There is trust, devotion and love between Ben, Janelle and others when they go through this adventure together. All relationships have those components and I loved how this was shown in the book through the good and the bad events that happen.

Adventure goes to one thing after another. You get the action, the drama, the love, the hardships and choices that are hard to make. All the emotions explode in this book! I was feeling quite a bit of things. You will fall in love with the story and the characters. I loved how Janelle learns the secret of Ben and his friends which was awesome. The way it unfolded was not what I expected. Janelle is such a strong character considering what she has been through. Some people would not be that strong.

I’m not going to give any of the spoilers out and about on this book because it is so great. Plus I want you to go get it. It’s different and had me hooked on from the first chapter. There is one line that everyone talks about that Ben says and I totally agree with them that it is such a fantastic line! Curious what it is? You’ll have to go get it.

I am so getting the next book in this series! Thanks for Elizabeth Norris for writing such an amazing story. Plus it was lovely to meet you too!

The Rules by Stacey Kade

Disclaimer: I bought this book to read to give it an honest opinion!

The Rules (Project Paper Doll #1)
Author: Stacey Kade
Pages: 416
Published: April 23, 2013
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules

My Take
I loved the cover! That’s what attracted me to the story. Once I read what this book was about, I decided to give it a go. The hardcover copy that I purchased was also autographed too! Yay!

The story takes place in high school and of course it has stereotypes of who’s he best in the class and such things as that. It’s told from Ariane and Zane’s point of view throughout the story which I enjoyed. You can get a real feel for Ariane and Zane are thinking and feeling. Both of them are struggling with things. For instance, Ariane constantly battles to stay under the radar and follows the rules that she is told to. Zane tries his best to be the best for his father and never seems to please him. He also misses his mother. Eventually these two meet under high school drama.

The drama in high is dealing with who’s who as your friend, bullying and surviving high school. The drama seems to be coming from Rachel, who’s a girl who wants to get everything her way no matter what the consequences are. I really did not like her at all. The story really does not go into that much into action except towards the end of the book, leaving it open for another I believe! We do learn a bit more about Adriane’s background which I found fascinating. I felt sorry of what Adriane went through and glad that she learns to stand up for herself in many ways.

Adriane and Zane together are amazing. Their witty remarks off of each other is playful and fun. They just fit nicely together. They seem to understand each other a little bit. Do they continue to be friends or no? Will Zane find out about her secret? Will Adriane end their friendship in order to be safe? What will happen?

I never read that much sci-fi genre but this one sure got my attention. Check it out today! Go pick up this book and give it a try. I could not put it down at all. I look forward to the second book. It just totally different and a bit serious on the side.

Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful. Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers. While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly’s life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor. Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings.

My Take
The cover is breathtaking! Sadly I had the ebook but I wish I had a paperback copy of this book. So pretty! The cover caught my eye and then I read the description of what the book was about as my brain told me to read it. So I did!

As I began this book, I was on an adventure with Molly as she goes hiking and finds a gateway that takes her to a new world! As she explores this new world, she meets some of the people that live there. Molly meets Victor and Weston. Weston is nice to her as Victor is not so nice and wants her gone. Molly likes them both but the attraction is stronger to Victor than Weston. Drama and action is shown throughout the book as well as emotions riding high here and there for some. Will sparks fly between Victor and Molly? You need to read to find out!

The world that Molly explores is amazing. The people, the history and creatures are just fascinating. The time on Arkana moves quicker than it does on Earth. Molly gets used to the time change and all. It’s a magical and fascinating world. I would love to visit it with a nice tour guide. Since the technology was unique, I’m going to post a line from page 83 “As I mentioned it is a special crystal. It collects solar energy that is subjected to pressure within the crystal and our people utilize the power.” I thought this was neat! In this world they seem to use the resources very well. There’s a few other fun, clean technology aspects in this book that I enjoyed as well. It was very cool!

I think Molly grows a bit in this book. She learns to keep Arkana a secret from her parents and everyone else which is a tough thing to do. Molly also is the type of girl who stands up for what she believes in as you will see in this story. She treats everyone nicely and does not pass judgement either. I also thing Molly is a strong character. She deals with drama at high school and learns to deal with it as best as she can.

What about Victor? He goes through a change as well. He is the tough guy in the book as he then meets Molly something changes. He learns to open up and let go of hate. His story is told in this book as well. What you learn about Victor makes you want to root for him and Molly to be together. I love how Victor is protective of Molly at times but runs hot and cold with her too.

I look forward to book 2 when it comes! If you are looking for a new adventure to go on, then this book is for you! Check it out. You will gasp and squeal when you read it! I know I did. Thanks for AB Whelan for writing this book and I look forward to more!

Slated Review

Disclaimer: I bought this book to read to give it an honest opinion!

Slated (Slated #1)
Author: Terri Terry
Format: Paperback
Pages: 448
Publisher: Orchard Books
Published: May 3, 2012

Kyla’s memory has been erased, her personality wiped blank, her memories lost for ever.

She’s been Slated.

The government claims she was a terrorist, and that they are giving her a second chance – as long as she plays by their rules. But echoes of the past whisper in Kyla’s mind. Someone is lying to her, and nothing is as it seems. Who can she trust in her search for the truth?

My Take
The cover jumped out at me because it stares at you giving you a curious wonder of what was it all about! Once I read the summary,I had to buy it. I started to read this book and could not put it down. I finished the book in two days.

The main character is named Kyla and her memory was erased so she had to relearn everything again of things. She was put into a new home with a mum and father along with a sister named Amy who was also been slated. Slated means that their memories were erased.

Once Kyla adjusts to living with the family, she slowly gets to go to school and she meets all kinds of people. She is curious of things and keeps getting told to be good and not break the rules. Anyone who gets slated have levo’s. Levo’s show their moods. If their moods go to 3’s or lower, they can blackout. They have to wear levo’s until the are twenty one. Basically they are controlled which I thought was kind of weird. Fear seems to be there and here for control.

Why are certain people slated? This makes Kyla wonder. Some are usually slated for a second chance from doing bad things. With all these questions going around in her head, Kyla starts to remember things. Even her nightmares seem to trigger memories as well. I loved how Kyla is different and she figures out the she is different. She does not give up! Determination is there for her and she knows it.

Kyla and hottie Ben are a cute and sweet romance, but I think it needed a bit more sparks there. I liked how Ben and Kyla bounced ideas off of each other and how they ran together too. Their relationship seemed more like friends than romance. Maybe the romance will come more alive in book two? Ben is also kind of like Kyla bit.

When friends and teachers get taken and go missing. Kyla’s questions seem to pour out more and more determination hits her. Will she get what she wants to know? The truth? Kyla learns of right and wrong and among others.

There’s tons of tension and suspense in this book. The book seemed to focus on Kyla in the matter of figuring out who she is and the past. The ending was amazing and really makes me want book number 2: Fractured to come out soon as possible so I can see what happens next with Kyla.

A great science fiction, thriller story for you all to read!

Time’s Twisted Arrow Review

Disclaimer: I was given this ebook to read from part of a book blog tour in exchange to give it an honest opinion!

Time’s Twisted Arrow (The Chronos Files #1)
Author: Rysa Walker
351 pages
October 1, 2012
Publisher: Gypsy Moon Books

They weren’t panic attacks. Of that, seventeen year old Kate is certain, no matter what the shrink told her parents. But it’s even harder to accept the explanation offered by her terminally ill grandmother – that Kate has inherited designer DNA from the time-traveling historians of CHRONOS, who were stranded in the past by a saboteur. Kate knows that her grandmother’s story could easily be the brain tumor talking, but that doesn’t explain the odd medallion or the two young men – one of them hauntingly familiar — who simply vanish before her eyes on the subway. It doesn’t explain Trey, the handsome stranger who now occupies Kate’s assigned seat in trig class. And it definitely doesn’t explain why Kate is now in an alternate timeline, where leaders of a previously unknown cult hold great power and are planning a rather drastic form of environmental defense.

In this new reality, Kate’s grandmother was murdered at age twenty-two on a research trip to the past, which means that Kate’s mother was never born, her father doesn’t know her and, for all intents and purposes, she doesn’t exist. The only thing keeping her from disappearing entirely is the strange blue medallion around her neck, and the only thing keeping her sane is her burgeoning relationship with Trey. To restore the time line, Kate must travel back to 1893 and keep herself and her grandmother clear of H.H. Holmes, the serial killer who is stalking young women at the Chicago World’s Fair. But that choice comes at a price – she’ll remember the past few months with Trey, but when he looks at her, he’ll see a total stranger.

My Take:
I loved this story! The book kept going and going with action and keeps your attention to turn the pages to find out more of what will happen with Kate. It was well written and a quick fantastic read.

I loved the main character Kate as she gets thrown into this whole new world of time travel. At first she was not sure about it but destiny calls to her to help. Kate has a gene that allows her to time travel with the medallion which I thought was pretty unique to have written in this story. I love how Kate immerses herself into learning time travel and how it works along with the rules so the time line doesn’t get disrupted. She heads back in time to save her grandmother who’s a time traveler herself which made my head spin. You’ll have to read the book to understand what I’m talking about!! You will love it.

As for the romance department, there’s two guys: Kiernan and Trey! Who will the be one for Kate? Kiernan is aware of time traveling and knows quite a bit. Trey is the other guy who falls for Kate during a timeline being disrupted for her. He was there for her and gave her chance to help. Will either one of them remember what is going on and their romance with Kate? Will Kate figure it out as well?

The ending left me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Will there be a sequel? I hope so!!! I want to know what happens next. The characters I just absolutely loved. I’m not indulging in all the details of this fantastic story because you need to read it yourself. It’s a great adventure. If you like time travel, a bit of sci fi, adventure and a bit of romance, then this book will fit perfectly with you. You won’t regret it! Pick it up today.
